Manx quilting block

Some years ago I spent almost 6 months for learning different patchwork and quilting techniques, different blocks and patterns. I have not tried all of them but those ones I was interested in I have tried.

Yesterday a quilt friend shared a very old technique and I realized I have not seen it before.

This is a Manx quilting block.

It is very easy, hand sewn  method that don,t need perfect measures.

I was challenged to make it by machine.

I decided to finish as a coaster because no idea what to do with a whole quilt the same technique. For now:)

Here is a short tutorial how to make the binding.

Do not place the last "logs". Instead of this use the backing for binding.

Double fold the sides by iron.

Double fold the corner.

Repeat with  all corners. Begin stitching from the middle of the side.

When reach the corner pivot with needle down.

Then turn back as close to the fold as you can.

At the next corner I made a back stitch in the inner corner. Hope it will lay more neatly.

The back

The back of the Hour Glass quilt

Finally finished the top of the Disappearing HourGlass quilt.

Added 6 inch boarders around and here is the result.

If you wander what has happened with the first block. Here it is.

I have implemented in the back.

I adore Log Cabin in each and every variation.

The quilting is on the way.

 Thinking of hand quilting...

To be continued...

The quilts' finishing

Almost one month I have been working on two similar quilts.
Having an challenging order I really satisfied with the final result.

The design is quite simple.Log cabins in three sizes - 6, 12, 18 inches.
Both quilts are the same order only the places of same colored squares are different.

I enjoyed myself making different backs.

Here I make the binding - the most pleasant task when all is finished.

The most interesting fact here is the way I have chosen fabric for the binding.
I wandered between white/black striped or checked fabrics.
Suddenly I had seen an IKEA fabric I hadn't put into the box.

I realized that cutting stripes will change totally this look.
Now I have two favorites IKEA fabrics - the "written"   for the backs and this one for the binding.

Triangle Log Cabin

Have you ever thought which quilt block  is one of the  is the most popular block - .I guess it is the Log Cabin quilt block.
It has many variations and modern renewals. Sometimes I am looking at them on Pinterest' boards and couldn't resist to pin more and more - so magnificent they are.

I have a dream wandering what will be happen if use triangle shapes instead of rectangle logs.
Waked up and began sketching.
Then gone to my studio and began working.
First prepared triangles  from different printed stripes.
.

I didn't like the first finished block. It was absolutely mess of prints although all are small flower printed fabrics.

The small pieces won't be different prints.

The last I have sewn was with dotted fabrics.

I think it is the better one.
Alternating solids with prints occurred successful idea.

In the evening  I made many different combination using my EQ7 and like all of them.
As I used an equilateral triangle as a basic shape there are many possibilities for collecting blocks - building hexies, collecting by rows, etc.

If you preffer to sew rectangle blocks ar have difficulty to attach bias sides of triangles keep reading.

For instance if you add triangles to build a rectangular block, there are such variant for combining them.

Do you like my play?

Enjoy and show me what you have created.

A Bavarian style cushion - made by order

So what should you make if you have such complicated order.
I was asked to sew a cushion cover Bavarian style, traditional German look for a 60 years jubilee.
I had idea to make something like houses with beams. Do you remember the houses in Germany?

Then wanted to make a cushion like a house,...
Then have seen a linen shirt with embroidery and gorgeous buttons on the front.
A brilliant idea crossed my mind.
Cut rectangle, different strips, attached on a piece of batting. Voila...

What about the back? Do you wander how I have used the buttons?

So did I the cushion.

Simply Log cabin baby quilt

I have rests from previous baby quilt the same pattern, but now decided to try something different.
Inspired by one of the blogger I follow:
http://www.ohfransson.com/oh_fransson/2011/03/5-reasons-to-love-modern-log-cabin-quilting.html

I cut the circles for the center of my Log Cabin, added some white stripes to separate from striped pattern.

Then an idea came into my mind - combining different direction of the stripes for the Log cabin. And it happens. See the result.

Now having my rest I am thinking about the back.
What will be the best choice?
