Finishing a quilt

After finishing a 9 patch deconstructed quilt top I made a quilt sandwich and pin with safety pins.

I chosen the FMQ design and draw some lines on a sheet of paper to train my hands.

The FMQ design is easy even for beginners.

Look at the back how it turned out.

This time made a wider binding finished with running stitch on the back.

First made the long sides. Cut 5 inch wide stripes and stitch on the front side.

Fold on the back with running stitch which is not visible from the top.

The stripes for the upper and down sides has to be half inch longer.

Stitched the corner and then turned over.

9 patch disappearing baby quilt

 9 patch disappearing block seems better suitable for a beginner quilter, but I have some  fabrics left and some gifted fabrics, so decided to give it a try.

I received the fabrics from a lady who wanted to learn making quilts and bought the fabrics for her first grandchild. Now she had a second one without learning :) So she decided to give the fabrics to me. Do you think the second grandchild will have a quilt?

I have been wandering on 5 inch or 6 inch squares so finally decided on 5,5 inches. At the next steps I realized this is not quite good, but I have started this way.

 I made 42 blocks because want make 7 rows and 6 columns.

I have to make 2 additional blocks and then have a little difficulties to cut small squares and rectangles, but finally I have 42 blocks. 

How to order them? There are many layouts.

 Because I used more than 9 fabrics it seemed too messy. 

I run our of orange and place in the centre yellow.

To group together big squares equal colors at the sides of orange small squares looks quite acceptable.

Although I ordered the block according their difficulty think that Block number 10 happened too easy.
I could not found the name of it. Some of the blocks in EQ7 has no name but number.

I like the touch of mustard as background in each block.

9patch sampler

The Block number 8 was easy to make - 6 HST triangles and 3 squares.

Number 9 was complicated.

Even I decided to use paper piecing sewing corduroy was not easy, but the result is satisfying.

The 9patch game continues

Now comes the block number 6 called Ribbon quilt. It was very easy to make.
Half square triangles and a square in the centre.

This is great if you want to have more Ribbon quilt blocks.
Probably one day I will give it a try.

The number 7 is very common Greek square.

To be honest I am very sorry I have started this project as a Recycle project - I have collected some corduroy shirts. They are very colorful and nice to touch, but sewing them is a disaster for me. Some of them are very soft, some have 3% lycra. I am very punctual to cut and sew along the lines of the printed pattern. This block took me a tittle more time than sewing it with cotton fabrics.

Anyway like the final look.

The game 9Patch

The game 9patch is almost to the end and I realized I haven't wrote any post after the third block.
This year I promise to be more organized.
Here is the block N4 (centre 9patch} and its place in the whole quilt.

The block Number 5 (Pinwheel variation) comes, too.

Here are some tips for sewing the star.

Once you prepare the star beams simply add to the other pieces of the 9patch block.

It is very important to look after the place of the beam :)
As you see I haven't looked.
Anyway - I like the result, so didn't rip.

The 9patch game

The game 9patch continues.
Even I am the part of designers team I was slightly nervous after sewing the first block.
I decided on recycling and using corduroy shirts so combining different colors seams a little bit difficult.
Adding new colors to this block made me calm.

And the place in whole project.

Next block from 9patch game

The next block was done last month, but I have some problems writing a post about.

I like how it turned out. Adding new colors make very cute touch.
There are different ways to prepare half square triangles (HST), but my favorite stays  this one:
Cut two squares, place them right sides together, draw a diagonal line and stitch 1/4 inch on the left and on the rights of the line. At the end cut along the line and press well.

12 blocks sampler quilt

The next project I participate is 12 block sampler. Each block is based on 9patch.

There will be a challenge to see ideas different quilter.
The size of each block will be 16 inches. At the end everyone will have a lap quilt around 48 x 64 inches.

I decided on recycling - some corduroy and fabrics.

I began with corduroy only, but found it is difficult to align  pieces - when put two pieces right side together they "stuck" and the seam is quite uneven.
My first bock

It is ease and fast to sew. each square is 4 inch finished/
I have constructed the central piece quite easy
Stitch together two strips  and cut three couples.


Then added a square opposite color to any of the couples.

 At the end I have stitched together the three columns.

Easy, isn't it?
Adding other squares and strips was like a kids play.
